Nonprofit impact: How do you know your nonprofit organization has actually impacted the culture?

Every nonprofit organization has been created to address a social cause or respond to a compelling need. The vision and mission statement articulate the purpose of the organization. The strategic plan outlines the steps to get from the current to the future. The financial statements and budgets keep score on the funding, the accountability communication plan keeps all of the stakeholders informed of the progress and the detailed matrix reports keep track of how many have participated in all of the program.

I see it all the time, "it's budget time"... All good business have budgets - most businesses have a time each year where they go through the budget process. This often serves as the only strategic process that a company utilizes - effectively looking backwards at past results to try to lay out what the next year will look like.

I was at an outdoor concert in Miami recently (VERY hot and humid, but worth it) and noticed one of the beer vendors. He had a wheelbarrow full of ice cold beer, wine, and water. He was dressed in a fun outfit, had a light on his hat and a string of lights around his neck. He was sort of “singing” his offerings of beer, wine, and water and there were a steady number of patrons either running up to him or sending money and orders down the aisle. He went up and down EVERY aisle over and over again. I noticed him because of his attitude and work ethic. He was working so hard in that heat and nothing was going to get him down. We will call him “Going-For-It-Guy.”

Nonprofit accountability is not a subjective matter; lack of accountability is not an option! A nonprofit organization that is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service, under IRS regulations chapter 501c3, is determined to be a Public Charity, which exists for purposes that will benefit members of the public. The corporation does not exist for the benefit of the founders, nor do the founders own the assets of the organization. The officers and director of nonprofits have a fiduciary and ethical obligation to their donors and the public at large to conduct themselves in an accountable and transparent manner. They have accepted positions of stewardship and must conduct their own self-governance consistent with the principles of the vision and mission of the organization.

It is time to start expanding your employee base. Among the many questions that you are faced with at this critical juncture, questions about compensation rise to the surface. How much do I pay these new employees? How does that compare to what I am paying my current employees? What is fair compensation to both groups of employees? What can I afford? What will it take to bring in the talent needed to ensure our continued success? What is the basis on which I should be paying these new employees?

Financing is often the most important focus for an early stage company. This is usually not healthy, as it can distract the entrepreneur from the key strategic and tactical issues that he or she is facing, but it’s understandable since running out of money normally means game over. To help you get on top of this situation and alleviate some stress, here are several thoughts that may be helpful to early stage companies in the financing context.

Often when I speak with larger consulting firms, they define the Operations Manual as the “Big Picture” of how an organization operates. It would include the Organizational Chart and the interaction between departments within the overall systems of the business. And, this is a great way to look at an Operations Manual for a larger company, along with job specific training manuals to bring in the smaller details. However, most companies stop at the Big Picture.

I was wondering…why do so many of us operate our businesses, often successfully, in complete and utter chaos? Then I remembered something Dr. Phil said….I can’t remember his exact words, but the message was, we never do anything without a payoff. So, what this means is that we are operating in chaos because there is a payoff. That seems disheartening, but actually, with this insight, we can begin to make changes to create our structure and improve success.

I talk with many seasoned and non-seasoned social entrepreneurs who are charging ahead to conquer that mountain and change the world, many with social causes, humanitarian needs, human rights, faith-based causes and the list goes on. The planet and its inhabitants require increased social impact of the under-served. Praise God that many social entrepreneurs are responding with passion to pursue justice and solutions for mankind. Many world changers burn economic, social and human capital struggling with non-core purposes.

In the early 90’s, I was an executive at Dearborn Financial Publishing. I was running the newsletter division and our revenue growth resembled a hockey stick. Income was soaring and I had a great management team in place. The board loved me, CNBC loved me, my wife and team loved the bonuses and my fan club was growing daily. I was the youngest executive in the company at 29 and everything I touched turned to gold.

New Product Development (NPD) best blossoms in that place where creativity commingles with structure – where fresh thinking is fostered in a nursery of structured liberation. Think of ideas as if they were offspring: They should be free to roam and explore, but they need fences – structure – in their lives to ensure safe maturation in a controlled environment.
